Training Log: May 30-31, 2009

Training today and yesterday included:
- Bike Riding
- Kong Vaults
- 1" wall walk
- Cement Grabs
- Cat Walk
- Lazy Vault

Biking Riding:
Again, leg conditioning therapy. I can now do a decent run without snapping anything out of place, still no sprinting. I figure if I give it another week it'll be okay.

Kong Vaults:
Well, I went to the park today to try it over the picnic table, and I EFFING DID IT. AND THEN I DID IT SOME MORE. HELL YEAH! As it happens, I guess all I really needed was for some people to be there... In this case, pride appears to be a source of confidence? Anyway, I never plan on botching it again. I'm going to force myself to keep clearing the table, and practice the technique doing it that way instead of landing on top of it. I overcame my biggest Parkour fear yet :D

1" Wall Walk:
Again, easy as always. A little faster this time.

Cement Grabs:
For some reason this scares me. There's very little pain involved...it just rips up my hands a bit. It's not terribly uncomfortable. I keep doing it just fine, I've got it down, but I'm apprehensive every time I do. Maybe as my hands get more calloused the fear of tearing will go away.

Cat Walk:
The cat walk is where you cross a thin bar on all fours. Its purpose is to train your entire body to balance in tandem. Doing this gets easier each day, I started on the bus gates, they're about 4" wide. I can currently cross those with ease. 2" poles are what I'm working on now, they're proving more difficult. There's no fear to overcome here, just balance practice.

Lazy Vault:
Tried it yesterday for the first time over a bike rack, but it appears to be a pretty powerful vault. I got a lot more air than needed. Tried it once over a pretty high wall today. I made it, but I think I need to move to something lower to get the technique down first. It might also help if there wasn't a small hill right on the other side of the wall too.

Training Log: May 29, 2009

Training today included:
- Bike Riding
- Kong Vaults
- 1" wall walk
- Cement Grabs

Bike Riding:
In an attempt to get my right leg back into working condition, I biked to the park to train today. It's a lot like biking. I dunno what you want from me.

Kong Vaults:
Same old story. Still didn't get it.

1" Wall Walk:
Balanced on a 1" wall, made it about 50 yards before I hit the end of the wall. Getting better, used my arms less for balance and just walked.

Cement Grab:
Jumped up 1' and grabbed a cement ledge, then did pull-ups. Dropped and jumped to the grab several more times. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be, grip was no problem at all.

Overall I kept it pretty low key, low speed. I didn't want to injure my leg even more.

Pseudo Training: May 26-27, 2009

No actual training session these past two days, but I do have some notes.

- Attempted QM (Quadriped Movement). Extremely physically tiring. Will have to do more often, as it requires a complete synthesis of arm and leg movement. Great thing to practice.

- Accomplished a wall run up a 6' non-keystone concrete wall several times quite easily.

- Accomplished a roll landing off said wall decently.

- Attempted to speed vault a waist high chain link fence. Terrible idea. Never do it again.

Training Log: May 22-25, 2009

Training this memorial day weekend included:
- Attempted kong vault over short side of picnic table.
- Navel high two step "speed vault".
- Wall climb.

Kong Vault:
Outright failure. Bad table, two step lead-up to table available, results were poor.

Speed Vault:
This one required a 1'-2' drop from the vaulting point over a thick rail. Still as easy as ever.

Wall Climb:
Awesome. Wall was around 6', and tiered. Two walls one after the next, one above the next. It's keystone, so foot grip was easy, was over it no problem after a few tries. Eventually went from one wall climb immediately into the next, covering a total of 12 vertical feet in 3 seconds. Topping out wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it would be, then again there are people who would kong vault a 6' wall. It felt good to understand how it should feel moving up the wall, if I can find one that sits around 8 feet that'd be awesome to try. Or a 6' that's not keystone.

A Lesson:
I hurt my right leg and the ball of my right foot over training the last few weeks, and just ignored it. After an hour of wall climbs, the leg could barely take my weight. So, it should be noted that recovery time is an absolute must after an injury. I'll probably have to wait quite awhile now to get back into serious work.

Training Log: May 21, 2009

Training today included:
- Attempted kong vault over short side of picnic table.
- Balanced along one inch wide wall.
- Strung together speed vault, quad land, jumping underbar.
- Rolls.

Kong Vault:
Today is day 3 of attempting this vault. I still haven't been injured aside from palm abrasions, but I can't bring myself to do it. I haven't even clipped my feet or knees on the table. No matter where I place my hands now, whether it's the beginning of the table or 3/4 of the way in, I land at the edge of it. The last two times I practiced I got over the table, but it never felt good and I was always off balance. It changed into a strange Kong/Speed vault, where the lift-off was for a kong, and the hand placement was too, but then I unconsciously lift my left arm and swing my feet by instead of through my arms.

So today I concentrated hard on making sure I was using my arms to propel myself forward in addition to the take-off, and getting my butt into the air for a longer dive. I'm feeling better about my technique now, perhaps I'll make the vault next time. I'm pretty sure it's just a fear issue.

Inch-wide Wall Balance:

Third try at this was a success. Went a significant distance in significant wind. It'll only get easier.

Strung Together:

My first attempt at putting parkour to use, although brief. I wish I could say I just did it, but I scoped it out first on the playground. Ran up two steps, speed vaulted a railing slightly over waist height to a 5 foot drop quad landing, ran under a slide that was 4 feet away, and did a jumping underbar over an obstacle 3-4ft off the ground through bars 2-3ft tall and wide. I don't think it was too bad, but it was just a good chance to try it out now that I have more under my belt than a speed vault. Lots of fun.

Rolls:

Effing rolls. The bread and butter I need to learn, but am having so much trouble with. If I don't think about it, I think they're pretty good. My first three rolls today were fantastic, and then they just started sucking. I'll keep drilling them, because getting three right is better than the none I was doing, but I wish it weren't taking so long to learn something so important.
