Training Log: September 25-29, 2009

Training over the last five days has included:

- Upper body conditioning
- QM
- Tic-tacs
- Cat Walk

Upper body conditioning:
There's actually a wide variety of exercises available to me while I avoid the knee. I still do my standard crunches (40-30-20) and elevated push-ups (20) each day, but I've added things like dips, this strange wall exercise where you hang your body off of it and move across only on your hands, dive-bomber push-ups, things like that. It's not vaulting, but it keeps me in shape.

QM:
This actually irritates my knee somehow, not sure why. As a result, I keep it pretty slow. Still doing it on the library ramp wall though, adds balance into the training.

Tic-tacs (horizontal wall run):
Attempted these, and trained these, for the first time today. I now regret it because they put a lot more stress on my knee than I thought they would, so it hurts again. It was still fun though, and I'm certain that once I've recovered I can have it down decently in a month tops. The hard part is figuring out how my feet need to be situated so the left foot can actually step on the wall and contribute instead of just slapping it. I think if I bend in the right leg more and quickly put down the left foot it should work better.

Cat Walk:
I left the Vibrams off today for the sake of babying my legs and feet, but it made the cat walk harder. My Filas don't have the grip on the rail my Vibrams do, and while I still made it up the rail I also fell twice (which I have never done on the Morrison railing before). This is definitely no good, and I'll have to continue training in the Filas to fix it. An observation: Rails are easier in the Vibrams, walls are easier in the Filas.

Training Log: September 21-23

Training over the past 3 days has included:

- Biking
- 1" Wall Walk
- 1" Cat Walk
- 6" Beam Run
- 8" QM Trot
- QM
- Wall Runs
- Kong Vaults
- Speed Vaults
- Lazy Vaults
- Precisions
- General Conditioning

Biking:
Yep.

1" Wall Walk:
Still easy as pie.

1" Cat Walk:
On the rink ledge it's still fine. There's a railing at MCAD around an inch in diameter that I've been trying to make it to the end of, but it's ridiculously hard. It's amazing the difficulty added when a mere half inch is removed. In front of Morrison on the thicker, angled rail I found out I can do the catwalk backward pretty easily.

6" Beam Run:
Didn't actually happen...whoops.

8" QM Trot:
This is fun. Monkey vault onto the library ramp wall and QM down the length of it. Great exercise.

QM:
Toss the waterbottle, throw my shirt at my feet, QM back and forth between the two from a QM walk, to trot, to gallop.

Wall Runs:
I'm learning how to utilize my left foot better. It's always hit the wall, but it's never actually been useful because I wasn't conscious of it. 7' walls are easy now because of it, and I get a lot more boost up the wall.

Kong Vaults:
Made it lengthwise over my first wooden table. Multiple times. I am now confident I can make it over the ones at Cherry View Park. It's really hard on the hands though, they felt bruised for awhile afterward.

Speed Vaults:
Low wall and picnic table. Nothing big.

Lazy Vaults:
Library ramp, rink wall.

Precisions:
Purple platform to 6" beam, block to block in front of the MIA.

General Conditioning:
2 mile run in the Vibrams resulting in blisters. 20 elevated push-ups daily.

General Notes:
My feet and knees are extremely pissed at me, especially after yesterday's 3 hours of training. I need to give them time to recover, legitimate time to recover. I'll have to look at upper body conditioning exercises on APK. It sucks to have to do it, but it's gotta be done or it's only going to get significantly worse.

Training Log: September 18, 2009

Training today included:

- Biking
- 1" Wall Walk
- 1" Cat Walk
- Rolls
- Landings
- 360° Underbars
- Precisions
- Sprint Vaults
- Lazy Vaults
- 6" Beam Run
- 1" Wall Squats

Biking:
I decided on something fun to do whenever I bike now. When I have enough momentum, particularly when going down slight slopes, I pedal backward at the same rate I would be pedaling forward. Not only does it help my legs get used to a wider range of motion, but I assume it looks really awkward to anyone who might see it.

1" Wall Walk:
Yep.

1" Cat Walk:
I didn't quite red line it today. Not a huge deal, I feel pretty comfortable with it at this point. By pretty comfortable, I mean really comfortable. Doing QM trots across the top of walls up to 9' high with concrete below will do that.

Rolls:
I only pulled off nine today. After the various attempts all week, my hip bone is pretty bruised. The solution to that would obviously be to stop landing on my hip. Fair enough, except it seems nearly impossible. I know it's not, because every once in awhile I pull it off, but I also know I'll hit it for 16/20 of my rolls during drills. I'd rather not suffer terrible pain whenever I do.

Landings:
10 off the bench, 5 off the purple platform.

360° Underbars:
10 at a standstill (it took me at least 15 tries to get 10 good ones), and 10 at a brisk walk. I struggled with these more than the last few times I've been at the park, I'm just over-thinking the technique.

Precisions:
Purple platform to 6" beam. Took 15 to make 10 without falling.

Sprint Vaults:
5 Speed, 5 Kongs, a traveling kong after each.

Lazy Vaults:
10.

6" Beam Run:
I was on that park perimeter for a very long time. I don't know how many laps I did, but I felt drenched in sweat when I decided to call it quits.

1" Wall Squats:
10, 7 without grabbing the pole for support.

Training Log: September 17, 2009

Training yesterday included:

- Speed Vaults
- Kong Vaults
- Wall QM
- Lazy Vaults
- Cat Walk
- Precisions
- General Conditioning
- Wall Runs

Speed Vaults:
Over the low wall.

Kong Vaults:
Practiced on the higher wall again, still a lot of fun to realize I can do it on walls that high.

Wall QM:
Monkey vault onto the wall top of the library ramp, trotting QM to the end of it. I'm sure it looks really strange to passerby, but it's really good for me. Coordination, balance, and strength training in one exercise.

Lazy Vaults:
Getting better with the left foot since I have to do them to efficiently get back off the library ramp after going over the wall.

Cat Walk:
Slanted rail in front of Morrison. Really easy work, but fun.

Precisions:
Blocks in front of the Target section of the MIA again. I probably shouldn't classify these as precisions considering the landing platform is so large, but they are fair sized gaps to be taking at a standstill with a two foot take-off and land.

General Conditioning:
20 elevated push-ups.

Wall Runs:
Getting much better at the top-outs, especially on the lower walls. I can currently make it up 6' with zero pause on the transition to the top. Really gratifying.

General Notes:
I keep forgetting to work on Tic-tacs at MCAD. The same stair walls in front of Morrison I use for wall runs provide the perfect surface for learning, that is, super rough with great grip. I'll be doing those on Tuesday for sure.

Training Log: September 16, 2009

Jesus, I really need to stop slacking off on this. What can I say? Life's very busy and writing this thing actually takes a fair amount of time. I'm not training any less, I'm just not posting about it.

Training today included:

- Rolls
- Kong Vaults
- Speed Vaults
- Precisions
- Landings
- Wall Runs
- QM
- Lazy Vaults
- General Conditioning

Rolls:
They hurt. Still. I dunno.

Kong Vaults:
Doing these legitimately with a two foot punch over chest high walls, and can do a two handed vault (swinging legs to the side) over shoulder high walls! Just need to work on it and that'll be between my arms too. Big news, that's a height record for me. Considering I've never konged anything higher than a picnic table before, I'm really proud.

Speed Vaults:
Still just doing these over the low walls. Seriously, that ramp structure at the MCAD library is ridiculously useful. 80% of my training today took place there. Since it's right in front of the main entrance I'm sure people think I'm showing off (took my shirt off for the first time at MCAD today, doubt that helped), but it's so useful I can't care. It's perfect.

Precisions:
Just across the blocks on the MIA.

Landings:
Down 4 steps, nothing serious.

Wall Runs:
Messed up my elbow on the top out for the tall wall. I really just need to work on the high ones more without getting to the top.

QM:
I'm loving a new routine...again at the ramp... monkey vault onto the wall, QM down the whole thing. Great exercise for coordination, balance, and strength.

Lazy Vaults:
Back over the wall after each vault.

General Conditioning:
Elevated push-ups and running.

Training Log: September 12, 2009

Training yesterday included:

-Biking
-1" Wall Walk
-1" Cat Walk
-Rolls
-Landings
-360° Underbar
-Precisions
-Sprint Vaults
-6" Beam Run
-1" Wall Squats

Biking:

1" Wall Walk:

1" Cat Walk:

Rolls:
More push with feet, more momentum, equals smoother roll.

Landings:

360° Underbar:
10 standing, 10 at a walk. Getting better.

Precisions:
I missed one, but I've decided it's a requirement to make 10.

Sprint Vaults:
10 Kong, 10 Speed, and a travelling Kong between each.

6" Beam Run:

1" Wall Squats:
These were harder than usual, but then again I don't think I've done them for a month. They'll get better again.

Training Log: September 11, 2009

Training yesterday included:

-Biking
-1" Wall Walk
-1" Cat Walk
-Landings
-Rolls
-Precisions
-6" Beam Run
-360° Underbars
-QM

Biking:
Definitely felt the knee rehab on this one. For some reason it's not getting better, which is worrying. I wouldn't say it's getting any worse, but that doesn't make me any more comfortable. It doesn't hurt while walking, running, or moving. It only hurts when my knee's been bent for a period of time (like sitting in a chair) and I straighten it.

1" Wall Walk:
Still easy. Having not done it for over a week made me go slower, but I didn't have any problems.

1" Cat Walk:
Red line. At MCAD I've been cat walking rails much harder than this wall, so it was pretty easy as well.

Landings:
10 off the bench, 5 off the purple platform. I'm starting to feel a lot more control in my landings, they're getting increasingly more quiet. I suppose this shouldn't be surprising consider that's the point of these exercises, but it's still good to note.

Rolls:
These are still causing me so much trouble. I guess all I can do is keep drilling, but it's frustrating.

Precisions:
10 of them from the purple platform to the 6" beam. No failures. Felt great.

6" Beam Run:

360° Underbars:
Took me a bit to work up to where I was when last I did them, but I've got them down at a walk again. Excluding all the ones I had to do to get back up to that point, I did 10.

QM:
Came up with a new exercise for this. Set up two points in the field, do walking QM, then trotting QM, then gallop QM from one point to the next.

UPDATE: It's been awhile

Training over the last...week? has included:

-QM
-Speed Vaults
-Kong Vaults
-Wall Runs
-Rolls

QM:
Happened a lot at the cabin, tried to stay away from drops. I've learned how to go full gallop now, and I can keep up with my cousin running when he has a beer in his hand he's trying not to spill. I also chased a dog around the yard a bunch. It doesn't feel awkward anymore, but it's still a lot of work.

Speed Vaults:
Over a table and a 4' wall. No specific numbers.

Kong Vaults:
Also over a table and that 4' wall.

Wall Runs:
I've found I really enjoy the 5'-6' walls. It's a fun pop over the top, and it's a good drill for flow.

Rolls:
Did these on carpet covered concrete. I've still got quite a ways to go, I need to tuck tighter.

General Notes:
After the cabin I basically went through hell for 3 days. Stayed at school overnight with an hour of sleep to get work done, it's been rough. Monday-Wednesday saw no Parkour at all. The cabin saw pretty much just QM up and down stairs and through a yard. MCAD Parkour has finally gotten off the ground, had our first meeting today. Only two people signed up, but we've got another possibility on the way. The person in charge of clubs happened to find us training on a picnic table and filmed us, then posted it to the MCAD activity site. That's generated some positive feedback. At the very least, people are interested in watching even if they're not participating. That's a start. Tomorrow will see my first hard training session in over a week.

Training Log: September 2, 2009

Training today included:

-Top Outs
-Monkey Vaults
-Wall Runs
-Lazy Vaults
-Cat Walk
-QM
-Precisions

Top Outs:
Still hard. Seeing as I posted yesterday's entry not 3 minutes ago, it can be assumed I'm having the same problem today as before.

Monkey Vaults:
Some friends came out to watch me today, one had me monkey onto a low wall over his head multiple times. It was good practice since I'm used to doing them right next to the edge, and I couldn't with him in the way.

Wall Runs:
Did two big ones (10'?) and a lot of 7'>. I can get on top of the 10' walls, but it's slop. Again it comes down to how shaky my technique is when I get to the top. Getting my hands up really isn't an issue, but getting into the position with the climb up where the top out is possible is really difficult. I just end up using my forearms, which is really bad form. This will be worked on, of course.

Lazy Vaults:
Same reason as before, they have to be done to get back over the wall without walking down the ramp.

Cat Walk:
Up the Morrison railing four times. Really easy. I've found that while the Vibrams may make it more difficult to do cat walks on the flat rails like the hockey rink, they make round rails a piece of cake.

QM:
Walked up and down the 10" wall I do lazies over a few times.

Precisions:
Again, out in front of the Target portion of the MIA. 15 across the blocks, nice and easy.

Training Log: September 1, 2009

Training yesterday included:

-Top Outs
-Wall Runs
-Cat Walk
-Precisions
-Landings
-Lazy Vaults

Top Outs:
These are getting increasingly easier. My feet come up between my hands almost 100% of the time. The problem is getting into the position to do them, especially with high walls. After watching a tutorial as I type this, I think that's going to take a lot of practice. That's the next step. He claims it's 50% strength, 50% technique, but whenever I've tried them it seems like so much effort. I'll try them tomorrow, we'll see.

Wall Runs:
Concentrated on doing the small ones in addition to grabbing the ledge from the top and turning into a top out position. I feel really comfortable with walls 7' high and under, I think the transition to the top is pretty smooth. As far as the turn grab is concerned, eventually I'm going to have to be able to do that from a standing position. From sitting is no problem, but I tried them at a crouch and it was really hard. Didn't manage even one.

Cat Walk:
Up a sloped railing. I don't know if I'll ever go down one facing forward, that seems to be a quick way to break my neck.

Precisions:
Jumping from block to block in front of the Target portion of the MIA. Big blocks, nothing strenuous. I'm really getting the feel for absorbing the impact by having my feet in front of my body though.

Landings:
10 onto concrete, short and sweet.

Lazy Vaults:
These aren't being drilled, but I have to do them to get off the library ramp. It's good practice though because the wall off the ramp is waist high and around 10" thick. Takes a little more effort to get the legs over, especially the left one (which is what I have to do).
